When Should You Update Your Estate Plan?

Creating an estate plan is an important milestone—but it's not something you should put away and never revisit. As life changes, your estate plan should change with it.

Major Life Events Matter

Marriage, divorce, remarriage, the birth or adoption of a child, or the loss of a loved one are all important reasons to review your estate planning documents.

These events may affect who you want making decisions on your behalf or inheriting your assets.

Financial Changes

Buying a home, starting a business, receiving an inheritance, or experiencing significant changes in your financial situation may also require updates to your plan.

Your Family Evolves

The guardian you selected years ago may no longer be the best choice. Your children may now be adults, or your family dynamics may have changed.

Reviewing your documents ensures they continue to reflect your current wishes.

Make Reviews a Habit

Even if nothing significant has changed, reviewing your estate plan every three to five years is a good practice. Small updates today can prevent major issues tomorrow.
